Letting go of a relationship isn’t easy…unless we’re talking about dropping your ex’s old hoodie (in which case, please, that’s souvenir status, and we both know it). On the real: saying goodbye to someone who felt like found family isn’t just a breakup. It’s a total shift in your reality.

It’s that ‘cry in the shower’ energy that hits you when you realize the person you were ready to go to war for wasn’t telling you the whole truth. It makes you question everything. Suddenly, you aren’t just losing a friend; you’re losing the version of yourself that trusted them implicitly.

Recognizing When It’s Time

Here’s where it gets personal. Remember that one friend from college? The one who’d pop by with lemon pound cake (the unofficial healing snack) and the juiciest updates, always knowing when you were spiraling before you did? Yeah, me too. We had our own language, chaotic memes, inside jokes that needed no context, just a side-eye and a smirk. But somewhere between “let’s FaceTime tonight” and “we should catch up soon,” the vibe didn’t just slip. It shattered. When your inside jokes start tasting like lemon water left out overnight (flat, a little sad, possibly with a fruit fly in it) it might be time to admit the fizz has faded.

“People come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime.”
– Somebody Granny

There was a time I believed long friendships equaled forever. Because, please, if you’ve been around since flip phones and Destiny’s Child remixes, you’re basically locked in, right? Sometimes we outgrow friendships faster than we donate questionable jeans to Goodwill. When hangouts start to feel like unpaid emotional labor and laughter arrives on a 3–5 business day delay, it’s valid to ask: are we doing this for love or just for the throwback photos?

For me and my best friend, I’ve been reflecting on time spent being angry, only to find out the truth was buried under layers of our own struggles. It’s hard to nurture a connection when the soil is crumbling. Now, she’s preparing to move away. The physical distance just might catch up to the emotional distance that has begun to fester.

Maybe that lack of definition is the hardest part. I don’t know if it’s truly over, but I do know that I’m certain about one thing: I am learning how to let go of what I thought we were.

If that’s hitting home, know you’re far from solo. I learned the hard way: nostalgia is sneaky, and friendship breakups rarely come with a soundtrack. Sometimes, letting go is less “dramatic exit scene” and more “quietly deleting the old group chat.” And hell, we may just need to start a new one.

Choosing Peace Over Loyalty

You can outgrow a friendship without a messy fall-out or a public relations nightmare in your Instagram Stories. Sometimes the love is still sitting right there, just properly socially distanced for your soul’s sake. Carrying a friendship past its expiration date feels like hauling around a purse full of old receipts and wizened citrus, hoping you’ll find a juicy slice in the mix. Sis, sometimes it’s vitamin C and sometimes it’s just… compost.

Choosing your peace (over loyalty to what never gave you peace in the first place) is about survival, not villainy. For us, it’s about realizing that I can’t fix patterns that aren’t mine to carry. That’s okay. Sometimes loving someone means waving from across the room. Even when that room is about to be an entire state away, you still wave. I’m learning to be consistently comfortable with the uncomfortable silence that comes when the ‘fizz’ fades. The world’s not going to end just because you declined another ‘we should catch up’ brunch. These brunches (with the wrong people) often end with awkward side-hugs and feel like an invoice for emotional labor anyway.

So, riddle me this: ever felt that weird urge to pause or break up with a friend and had no villain moment to blame? Did it sneak up on you like avocados turning overnight, except it’s lemons, bright and shiny on the outside, low-key plotting their own exit on the inside? If so, you’re in solid company.

Drop your stories, lessons, or “let it go” anthem recs below. If you’ve ever had to sip something bittersweet and cut ties, let’s hear how you made it work, your survival tips might just be the next citrusy life hack another reader needed to squeeze a little more joy from their own mess.
